Photographs first, always
The first thing we do on arrival is photograph the damage, in place, before a single tool comes out. Splintered jamb, bent striker, the marks a screwdriver left on the frame, the state of the lock itself. Insurers ask for this and the moment we start repairing, the evidence is gone.
You get those photographs, along with a written description of what was damaged and what was done. Whether you end up claiming or not, having it costs nothing and not having it can cost a great deal.
Closing the house the same night
The aim is a door that locks again tonight. Reinforcing the jamb, fitting a longer strike into the framing timber, replacing a damaged cylinder, pinning a slider that has been lifted off its track — most forced doors can be made properly secure in one visit.
We board up only when the frame or the door itself cannot be made to work before morning. It is a genuine last resort and not the reflex answer.
Rekey, even if no keys were taken
After a forced entry we rekey as a matter of course, and we recommend it even when nothing obviously went missing. Keys sitting in a bowl by the door are among the easiest things to take and the last things anybody notices are gone.
It is minutes of work while we are already on site with the cylinders in reach, and it removes the question entirely. Sleeping in a house where you are not sure who can open the door is its own kind of damage.
